IBS is a troublesome disorder where something is wrong with the way the gut works. The problem might be with the way muscles or nerves work, or with the way the brain and the gut signal each other. It'll cause pain or discomfort in the belly (abdomen), and all kinds of bowel problems.
Gut pain or discomfort, diarrhea, constipation - these are symptoms and signs that something is not right. Just about everyone experiences these now and then. For most, it is usually a short-lived problem. It may be caused by a bug going around, bad food, or a change in diet or routine. After a few adjustments or a few days the problem goes away. Not so with IBS.
In IBS, the signs and symptoms don't go away, or they do for awhile but then come back, off and on, again and again. When they become bothersome or long-lasting, it's time to see a doctor to find out what's going on.
